What to Do When a Power Outage Occurs | Teems Electric

In the aftermath of the recent hurricanes, the team at Teems Electric Company, Inc. wants you to know how to be better prepared in case a natural disaster ever occurs in our area, knocking out power for a long period of time. Would you know what to do?

When the Lights Go Out

First, in order to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, it’s absolutely essential that you never use a generator inside your home. Always use it outside. It can become a fire hazard—therefore, keep it outside during use.

Second, carefully consider whether your food is safe. In general, the FDA indicates that refrigerated foods are safe in cases of power outages lasting four hours or less. To ensure food remains safe during that time, keep the refigerator door shut. A full freezer will maintain its temperature for 48 hours, while a half-full freezer will keep food safe for 24 hours. Any perishable foods that are exposed to temperatures greater than 40 degrees for two hours or more should be discarded.

In addition to food, you also want to ensure the water you are drinking is safe. During a power outage, the water purification system within your building may not be functioning correctly. Therefore, water could be contaminated and unsafe to consume. If you’re unsure whether the water is contaminated, play it safe by only consuming bottled water.

Finally, even during a power outage, it’s important to stay safe from electrical shock—which still can occur. If you believe someone suffered electric shock, be sure not to touch the person, as he or she still could have the current within his or her body, causing you to be shocked, too. Call 911 immediately.
