What is an LED Light?

It seems that nowadays we skip basic processes that used to be explained, all in the name of efficiency. We learn that it’s more green to go with an LED bulb, so we just go with it, forgetting to ask why. Well, today we want to explain the why to you.

For starters, LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and LED lights are widely considered much more energy and environmentally friendly than their CFL counterparts. Not only that, but LED lights can save you quite a bit of money each year.

Here are three facts about what an LED light is:

1) Diode
So LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, but what is a diode anyway? A diode is a device that allows a current to flow in only one direction. When placed in contact with each other, almost any two conductive materials will make a diode.

2) Makeup
There are two different types of LED: indicator and illuminator. Indicator LEDs are small, cheaper, and not as bright, and typically serve purposes such as the gas light in your car, while an illuminator takes after its name and illuminates the room you are in.

3) Colors
You may be wondering, “How do LED lights have different colors?” Well, they produce photons at different wavelengths, and those wavelengths manifest themselves as individual colors.
