Watch Your Energy Bill Fall | Teems Electric

A lower electric bill is something we all want, and there are probably things you do on a daily basis to help cut your energy use. While taking steps toward being more energy-efficient can go a long way toward lower monthly bills, you can also get an extra boost during the change of the season.

Fall brings us a lot of wonderful things, especially here in the South where our summers can get so incredibly hot. Cooler nights and a nice breeze during the day are more than welcome changes. Fall is also the perfect time to give your energy and your wallet a break by making a few seasonal energy choices.

Take Advantage of the Season & Call a Professional

Did you know that two of the biggest energy draws in your home are your HVAC system and your lighting? Maybe HVAC felt pretty obvious, but you might not realize how much leaving lights on around the home really drains your power. During the fall, it’s the perfect time to let your home cool naturally by cutting the AC up a little higher and opening some windows on cooler nights.

Along with using your HVAC less, you can also use fewer lights as most fall days bring plenty of sunshine. With the slight dip in the temperatures, you may be able to leave your blinds open a little longer and rely on natural lighting for most of the day.

Use the changing season as an opportunity to schedule some regular maintenance, including having your HVAC professionally serviced. Check your windows and doors to make sure the seals haven’t deteriorated, and consider adding insulation to your attic. If you have a fireplace, fall is when you should have it professionally cleaned and checked to ensure you can safely operate it the three days our southern home allows us to have winter.

Add Some Maintenance to Your To-do List

Spring-cleaning isn’t the only time you should get down and dirty with home maintenance. Fall is also a good time to add a few things to your regular to-do list in order to prepare your home for winter. A few simple changes can go a long way in lowering your electric bill and making your home more energy-efficient.

Switch ceiling fans to turn the other way after giving them a good dusting. This helps keep the warmest air flowing so you don’t have to run more heat. Insulate your water heater and check its temperature settings. While you may have to go a little warmer than your summer setting, don’t go higher than 140 degrees.

Consider switching your thermostat out for a programmable one. This is usually a pretty easy DIY, but if you have scheduled regular maintenance for your HVAC or furnace, talk with a professional about your best options. Pull furniture a little farther away from vents to give a little more air flow and keep things warmer. Dust around them as well to prevent any potential fire hazards.

Fall brings a lot of joy to all of us. While you enjoy the pumpkin spice, falling leaves and bright red apples of the season, take time to make your home more energy-efficient. That way you can also enjoy lower bills and more spending money for all the pumpkins.
