Warehouse Building Efficiency | Teems Electric

Operating a warehouse can get rather expensive. With the overhead cost of keeping things going and other day-to-day costs, things can really start to add up. Even just the costs of keeping the lights on and the temperature controlled can really take a toll.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to make warehouses more energy-efficient in order to cut down on the costs of simply being open. With a few tips and tricks and some simple switches, you can cut your electric bill substantially.

No-Cost Tips

If you are building your warehouse from the ground up, you can certainly make the most energy-wise choices in order to cut later costs. If you purchased a building, you might feel locked in with what you have, especially if you have no room in the budget for renovations. Fortunately, there are some no-cost ways to make your warehouse, regardless of its age, more energy efficient.

One of the simplest things you can do is turn off what you aren’t using. If you don’t operate at night or only utilize a part of your space, cut the lighting and increase or decrease the temperature according to the season.

Perform a nighttime audit to determine what is needed and what isn’t needed that pulls power overnight. If janitorial services is the only kind of work that occurs overnight, consider changing the service hours in order to clean while other operations are occurring.

During the day, utilize all the sunlight you can to cut back on how much lighting is being used. This can also help with temperature control. On cooler days, open any bay doors to allow nature to be your air conditioner.

Switch to task lighting, or floor and desk lamps, rather than overhead lighting anywhere that is feasible throughout your warehouse. Unplug office equipment that isn’t used regularly; and don’t forget the smaller stuff when you do. That coffee pot still pulls a lot of electricity when it isn’t in use!

Low-Cost Upgrades

Along with the no-cost ways to cut your electric bill, there are few upgrades you may want to consider as well. Switching to LED bulbs can not only cut your electric cost, but it can also lower your maintenance costs. With much longer life spans, you will not need to change them as often. This is particularly helpful if your overhead lights require heavy equipment to reach.

Check out your insulation around your warehouse for another way to cut costs. A well-sealed building means your HVAC system won’t have to work as hard to maintain steady temperatures. Upgrading your HVAC system to a split unit or heavier duty unit isn’t a low-cost upgrade, but it may be something to plan for in order to make the biggest financial difference.

Adding smart switches to both your lighting and your HVAC control can be helpful to control electric usage as well. There are some inexpensive options, and adding them means not only can you turn lights on and off from anywhere, but you can also catch if your regular temperatures are out of control which could be an indication of a larger problem.

Operating a warehouse doesn’t have to leave you steeped in high bills month to month. Make some simple and easy changes and cut your electrical costs while you keep your business going.
