Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather | Teems Electric

We know that it still feels like summer is here due to the persistent heat, but rest assured, winter will be knocking on our door as soon as we know it! While we certainly do not experience winters as severe as other parts of the country, our cold season is still nothing to disregard.

When the nights get longer and the temperatures get lower, your heating unit will have to work hard to keep things cozy in your home—plus, you are likely to see a higher electricity bill due to more light usage in the evenings, too!

While this is the natural cycle of things, there are things that you can do now to prepare your home for winter to be sure you are not wasting energy and lighting unnecessarily. By utilizing a winter preparation checklist now you can do all the things you need to do well in advance of cooler weather.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter

Check all of your home’s seals. Weatherstripping around windows and doors can wear down over time and become less effective at keeping warm weather in and cold air out. Check all of your weatherstripping to prevent heat loss, replacing as necessary.

Do a test run of your heating system. You do not want to wait until the first cold night to make sure your heating system is working properly! Now is a good time to go ahead and do a test run to make sure warm air is still flowing out of your vents when you turn the thermostat to heating mode.

Be sure you are using energy-efficient bulbs. As it begins to get dark earlier each evening, you will have to start turning the lights on sooner and leaving them on for longer—so now is a great time to prioritize swapping in energy-efficient bulbs in all of your light fixtures. Over the winter season, this small upgrade can help you save big time!

Check your carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are still working by testing them now. Because you are spending more time indoors and potentially using gas-producing heat sources during the winter, it is important to be certain these alarms are fully functional.
