Outdoor Electrical Safety | Teems Electric

Now that spring is finally here, are you spending more time outside? This is the perfect time to head outdoors to cook, play and share a laugh with the kids. The warmer weather also means that we don’t have to head indoors when the sun goes down!

It can be the best time to start cleaning up from the winter months by clearing out leftover leaves, sticks and dead plants—making room for fresh flowers and new gardens.

It’s inevitable that as we spend more time outside we will start using more electricity outside, too. Whether you are using electricity to charge your equipment or light the back porch, there are a number of ways we rely on electric items to better enjoy our backyard. Use electricity safely outside so you can enjoy every moment of the season.

Plug It In

When it comes to using electricity outside, the first thing you should do is ensure what you are using is rated for exterior use. This means that extension cords, electric appliances, yard tools or anything else you use should specifically say rated for outdoor use.

This will not only ensure what you are using can weather the elements well, but it will also safeguard you against using the wrong amperage.

Outlets outdoors should have ground fault interrupters, or GFCIs, and should have a cover over them that will keep the elements out when they are not in use. Never plug an item in that has had the third prong removed—this puts you at risk for a fire.

Pay close attention to how things are plugged in around water. If you have a pool, your outlets should be a safe distance away from it and have weatherproof covers on them in order to keep water out. Any electrical equipment installed around a pool or hot tub should be a good distance away—five to 10 feet is a good rule of thumb to follow.

If a storm comes through, unplug as many items as you can. Cover your outlets and avoid water any time there is lightning in the area.

Extend It Safely

Anything electrical that will be permanently installed should be done by a professional so that it meets every standard of safety. For other electrical items you use, follow a few safety rules to prevent potential shocks, fires or equipment failures.

Check your extension cords before plugging them in. Along with being rated for outdoor use, they should also be long enough for wherever you need electricity.

Plugging two extension cords into each other is not advised as this can pull too much power and start a fire. Make sure there are no fraying ends or loose wires in your cords and remember that extension cords are for temporary use only. If you need power long-term, it is safer and more cost-effective to have a professional install an outlet.

If you use battery-operated yard equipment, don’t leave chargers plugged in all the time. This is a drain on the batteries and your home electricity, but it can also lead to overheating and potential fires. Plug them in a few hours before you need them, and unplug them when you are done.

Enjoy your time outdoors safely by ensuring your equipment is in good shape and used properly. There is no better place to be than outside when the weather is warm, and when you have taken steps to prevent fires and other electrical hazards, you can love every minute of the season.
