Make Electrical Safety a Priority | Teems Electric

Did you know that more than 350,000 home fires occur each year? And a large number of those fires could be prevented with some basic fire safety principles.

Our team at Teems Electric wants to share some tips on ensuring your home is fire-safe:

Check Your Outlets & Cords

This step is very important. Take some time to walk through your home and look at all your electrical outlets and power cords.

There are a few things you specifically want to look for:

  • Are any of your outlets overloaded?
  • Are any of your cords frayed?
  • Do you have electrical wiring running under carpets or rugs?

All three of those items above are fire hazards, so if you spot them, you’ll want to take steps to fix the problem.

If your outlets are overloaded or you have wiring running under carpets, have a professional install additional outlets in easy-to-access spots that don’t require wiring to run along the floor. Replace any cords that have frayed.

Electrical outlets can also be a hazard for small children, so be sure you are using outlet covers to keep those little ones safe.

Consider Your Home’s Electrical System

How old is your home? If it’s 25 years or older, it’s important to have a professional take a look at the electrical system.

Depending on the state of your system, you may need to replace wiring or make other updates to ensure you’re fire-safe and within code.

This is especially important if your circuit breaker has been tripping regularly or you’ve noticed other issues.

Unplug Those Devices

If you’re headed out of town for fall break or the holidays, you’ll want to unplug many of your non-essential appliances before you go. You wouldn’t want an appliance to spark a fire while you’re away from home.

So it’s better to be safe than sorry and unplug items like toasters, computers and even your Christmas tree lights before leaving your home behind.
