Let's Talk About Fire Safety | Teems Electric

October is known as Fire Prevention Month! In recognition of this month, the team at Teems Electric wants to bring awareness to fire prevention, especially when it comes to electricity. Read on as we take a look.

How Are You Practicing Fire Safety?

Did you know that according to the U.S. Fire Administration, Americans experience 24,000 electrical fires a year? There are five main causes of electrical fires:

  • Electrical wiring
  • Light fixtures
  • Faulty outlets
  • Extension cords
  • Space heaters

Fortunately, by taking proper precautions, you can lower your risk of experiencing a fire because of an electrical issue.

Electrical Wiring

There are certain signs to watch out for when it comes to faulty electrical wiring in your home or office. For instance, if your circuit breaker trips often, then you might be having issues with your electrical wiring. In addition, the smell of burning or discoloration of wires are also signs you might need to upgrade your electrical wiring.

Extension Cords

Many homes and offices use extension cords for a number of reasons. However, it is important to remember that an extension cord deteriorates over time, which can cause an increased risk of electrical shock and be a fire hazard.

Therefore, you only want to use extension cords for a short period of time. Plus, you do not want to use an extension cord on a permanent basis, and they should never be used in ceilings, floors and/or doorways.

Space Heaters

The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that around 25,000 residential fires occur annually due to space heaters. It is extremely important when using a space heater at home or in the office that you are using it properly.

You need to make sure your space heater is about three feet away from anything that can burn. Also, you do not want to use an extension cord or power strip when using your space heater, as there is a risk of overheating that can, then, lead to a fire.
