How to Maintain Your HVAC Unit

With temperatures still dropping into the 20s and 30s on some days this time of year, it is important to ensure that your heater is working. Although you should get regular, professional checkups performed on your HVAC unit, there are DIY ways to perform routine maintenance on your unit to ensure that it runs well through the remainder of the winter.

So break out your flashlight, get your gloves on, and do your best impersonation of that HGTV host you always watch when your friends aren’t over (we won’t tell), because it’s time to work on your heating unit.

Here are 3 easy things you can do to extend the life of your HVAC unit:

1) Check Thermostat
Is your home feeling the way it is supposed to from a heat point of view? The easiest way to test your HVAC unit is to check the thermostat, and then test the temperature to ensure that the heater is doing the job it is meant for.

2) Change Air Filters
Changing the air filters on your heating unit (air conditioning too, when summer hits) once a month ensures that your energy costs stay low and your equipment doesn’t incur any early or unwarranted damage.

3) Lubricate Moving Parts
Any moving parts in your heating unit that are not properly lubricated will create unneeded friction in the motors and, thus, increase your electricity consumption and possibly lead to damage.
