How Low Can Your Home's Energy Bill Go? | Teems Electric

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…to start getting in the habit of saving energy—and money.

That’s why our team at Teems Electric wants to share some tips on how you can lower your energy costs this winter:

First, you want to make sure you are checking the temperature on your hot water heater. Many units suggest setting the temperature at 120 or 140 degrees, but your unit’s manual should include the optimal temperature for your specific model.

While it’s common to adjust the temperature on the water heater to warm up the water in your home, keeping it even slightly lower may help you moderate your energy costs.

Second, you want to make sure you are repairing leaks as soon as you find them in your home. Better yet, try to make it a point to walk around your home periodically checking for any potential leaks.

While a leak can be silent at first, once your energy bill comes, it can make a huge dent in your wallet. Therefore, by finding leaks as soon as possible, you are both protecting your wallet and protecting your home from water damage.

Third, you also want to be sure you are changing your home’s air filters regularly.

Check the packaging of your air filter and the user’s guide for your HVAC unit to determine how often the filters should be changed out. If you have pets or a particularly dusty home, you may even want to change them more often.

Once you determine the appropriate frequency to change out your filters, set a reminder on your phone or calendar to make sure you remember. Your HVAC unit will run more effectively with clean air filters.
