Get Ready for Spring with Air Conditioning

It seems that spring has sprung even quicker than normal this year, and with the temperatures quickly rising, many of us will be turning on our AC units in the not-so-distant future. However, after months of laying dormant, your AC unit may benefit from a tune-up heading into the warm months of 2016.

So how exactly do you whip your AC unit into shape? Are there any tips on how to improve your unit’s performance without greatly increasing your utility bill or racking up a fortune in tools from The Home Depot?

Here are three ways to make your AC cold without heating up the prices:

1) Turn off the power.
No matter what you do next, this is always the first step. Turning off the power may seem simple, but focusing on switching the power off every time ensures a safe process for all.

2) Clean debris.
Is your AC unit underneath any trees, next to leaves, or just in a generally messy place in your yard? If so, a simple cleaning of your unit, freeing it from any debris or acts of nature, may result in a higher function when the time comes.

3) Check the coolant lines.
Are there areas of the coolant lines where sections of the insulation are missing? If so, make every effort to replace this insulation as quickly as possible. Has the chord simply frayed? If so, you may be able to use insulation tape to wrap up the frays, applying it in a spiral motion for best results.
