Falling Leaves & Electrical Hazards: What's the Connection? | Teems Electric

Are you ready for the change of seasons? While you might be ready for those cooler temperatures, the team at Teems Electric wants to offer some advice on how to get your electrical equipment ready for fall, too.

Electrical Safety Tips

Let’s look at some ways you can practice electrical safety when transitioning from summer to fall:

First, make sure you are safely storing warm weather tools like lawn mowers and trimmers. While you want to make sure they’re ready to use come spring, you also want to keep them as protected as possible during the extreme cold weather in the winter.

Check cold weather tools, such as leaf and snow blowers, along with their power cords, for unusual wear and tear. Repair or replace worn tools or parts right away to ensure they don’t present electrical hazards.

In addition, you want to make sure you are unplugging and safely storing battery chargers that won’t be in use again until spring. Especially this time of year, you only want to use weatherproof electrical devices for outside activities.

However, when using tools that are meant for outside, you want to protect those outdoor electrical devices from moisture. Make sure electrical equipment that has been wet is inspected and reconditioned by a certified repair dealer.

Also, as the leaves begin to fall, make sure to keep dry leaves away from outdoor lighting, outlets and power cords. Leaves can easily cause electrical sparks and quickly spread fire.

Finally, before use, you want to make sure electric blankets are certified and in good condition to use. Do not tuck your electric blanket under mattresses—and turn it off when not in use.

Also, if your furry friend is joining you during a chilly night, make sure your family pet is not laying on top of the electric blanket, as that can be especially dangerous.
