Enable Your HVAC System to Work Smarter, Not Harder | Teems Electric

As spring approaches and the average daily temperatures start to rise, your HVAC system is about to become an integral part of your daily life once more. Because we get our fair share of humid, sweltering days here, it may seem like there is nothing you can do to save on your electricity bill in the summer months—but we’re here to tell you that is not the case!

A home’s heating and cooling costs accounts for about half of its total energy usage, and while hot weather will always make your total energy expenditure rise, we have some helpful tips so you can save and still stay comfortable in the heat.

Setting Your HVAC System Up to Work Smarter, Not Harder This Summer

Make sure your system is in good shape. It is recommended that you get your HVAC serviced once a year to make sure it is running at peak efficiency and catch any issues before they become detrimental to your system. An annual service will remove debris from your system, ensure that your thermostat and your unit are communicating effectively and make sure that any energy you are putting into your HVAC is working for you.

Avoid overcompensating with your thermostat setting. If you come home and things feel stuffy, you may be tempted to turn the thermostat way down to get colder air throughout your home. However, this is actually a major way to rack up unnecessary expenses as it does not cool your home faster. Instead, consider scheduling your thermostat to start cooling about half an hour before you get home each day to keep things comfortable when you walk through the door.

Regularly replace your air filters. It is recommended that you change your air filters at least every three months, but for people with pets and children, this frequency will typically be increased to once per month. Clogged filters can inhibit the HVAC system from doing its job efficiently, meaning it must work harder to pump out the same amount of air.
